Communication Between Parents and Teachers

The teachers do their best for your children, but they need your help. Parents may communicate at any time with teachers, to discuss their children's progress and conduct. Speak to your child about your discussion with the teacher openly but in a positive way.

Stress his/her good comments and in what ways the child needs to improve:

  • To behave courteously towards the teacher and all parties involved in Greek education.
  • To collect their children from school at the designated time and exit. Any delay past 6:10 p.m. should be communicated beforehand to the teacher or school office.
  • To advise the teacher or the school Principal if their child is going to be absent for more than one day or during school programs.
  • Parents should address the school Principal for grievances, the teaching staff, books, homework, methods, of instruction, or whatever else is related to education in the Greek school. . .
  • Arguments between parents and teachers and students or unseemly behavior are to be avoided. Our children learn from our adult actions. Mutual respect between parents and teachers is absolutely necessary.

Restrictions

  • All types of vandalism are strictly prohibited.
  • The students are not allowed to leave the area of the school. They are not allowed to visit the gymnasium at any time during the hours that Greek school meets.
  • Any type of ball playing is not allowed during Greek school.
  • None of the students are allowed to leave the building during the hours the Greek school is in session.
  • Foods, drinks, or chewing gum are not allowed in the classrooms.

The parents are asked to discuss the above rules with their children and make them responsible for their actions while in Greek school. Both parents and students must understand that the teaching staff of the Greek school does not bear any responsibility for damage caused as a result of disobedience to above rules and regulations. The parents of students that cause any type of physical damage in the school will be responsible for the repairs and expenses incurred in making those repairs.

Disciplinary Rules

Student's behavior during school has to be exemplary. If problems develop disciplinary .action may include:

  • Extra homework assigned by the teacher or principal.
  • Assignment of manual work at school (such as blackboard cleanup, etc..)
  • Staying over after school for as long as the teacher decides.
  • Report to the principal.
  • Other punishment pending decision of the teaching staff, including the possibility of temporary or permanent expulsion from school. Parents will be notified of any disciplinary actions taken by the teacher in correcting the student.

Homework

The teachers of the Greek school are always willing to do whatever is necessary to fulfill their purpose. However. because the school day is not very long, the children have homework every week. They complete the corresponding lesson that they have to study. If they are absent, they must do the lesson that follows as well, so that they will be able to keep up with their classmates and not fall behind. If they do not understand something they can ask for the teacher's assistance.

Homework should be done as follows:

  • The students must read the lesson they are working on three to five times out loud with proper pronunciation, proper style, and pace, so as to understand the contents well.
  • The students must learn the vocabulary and the word's meaning, and formulate different sentences so as to understand the words well.
  • The students must learn proper spelling of all words.
  • The students must learn the proper grammar both in written and spoken form (verbs, nouns, etc..etc..)
  • The students must write a composition according to their ability (age and class).
  • The students must use the Greek language every day. "Repetition is the mother of learning !"

Rules and Regulations

Absences: Regular class attendance is essential. Absent students not only fall behind in their lessons, but they tend to keep the entire class behind in its work. A student with 10 absences will have to repeat the same class the following year. A student that comes to class without his or her books and notebooks will not be allowed to attend the class.

The bell rings at 4:10 p.m. The students must enter their classrooms, get their books ready, sharpen their pencils, give their homework to their teacher, etc... Any student arriving after 4:10 p.m. or leaving before 5:45 p.m. will receive the appropriate absence.
